In Older Kids our Colonial America/Revolutionary War unit has come to an end. Students completed their essays on a famous person from this time and added a picture and sources to the finished work. This week we are going to take a pause between units and spend some time thinking ahead to our final project of the year. Older kid students end the year by completing a personal project about a topic of their choice. The finished project will include various forms of writing and more. As the time approaches, we will explain in more detail. However, at this time we are going to start brainstorming possible ideas for this project. The kids will answer some questions to help them generate topics that they might want to study in more depth.
Our literacy time has been filled with great discussions about our historical fiction novels. Please help your child remember that they also have some assignments that accompany the reading. We are giving lots of time in class for reading, but students will probably still need to do some work at home. In Writing Workshop we are about to start a new narrative writing. Students can write a story about anything they want as long as it follows the structure of a good narrative and is short.
We hope your children have been practicing some stress relieving techniques as part of their recitation. We have been talking about this a lot at school and some students have been willing to share strategies and whether it worked for them. This week for homework, each older kid will design and create a small rectangle for our class “quilt” of coping strategies.
Our annual Spring Event Fundraiser is right around the corner on Saturday, March 9th at the Elizabeth Hotel in downtown Fort Collins. The theme is Casino Night which sounds like such a fun evening! There will be casino games, a silent auction, and delicious hors d’oeuvres and beverages to join. Each ticket includes 100 chips to use at various casino games. Please invite friends and family! If you bring a guest from outside of Rivendell, you will receive an extra 100 chips. You can buy tickets at the table in the entryway. We hope you will come to show your love and support of Rivendell.
