Rivendell Technology

week of Oct. 1

Younger Kids

This week we learned about web browsers, at Rivendell we use Google Chrome. Maybe you could share what web browser you use at home to connect to the internet. Since Halloween is around the corner I showed them a website where they get to create characters with different animal/insect parts. http://www.buildyourwildself.com/

Middle Kids

We watched a short video about cybersafety on http://www.brainpopjr.com/health/besafe/internetsafety/. Then Beate gave them a research assignment for German that I helped the kids with.

Older Kids

We started the week off watching a video on cybersafety http://www.brainpop.com/technology/computersandinternet/onlinesafety/preview.weml and then changed our Google Account passwords so that they were more secure. Then I introduced them to Google Presentations in preparation for a project they will be doing about Ancient Rome. On Weds. the fourth graders got to create their own website, which will only be accessible to those on the Rivendell Account.

Week of Sept. 24

This week is the kids’ favorite week, Free Choice. If the kids have a good month and get all of their work done, they get to choose from available educational games to play during their computer time.

Week of Sept. 17

Younger Kids

This week the kids had fun playing on a site called GameGoo and learning how to use the back button when navigating on the internet.

Middle Kids

We continued practicing our keyboarding and then they checked out some games that have to do with Ancient Greece.

Older Kids

In Older Kids I introduced Google Drive to the kids and how we will be using this for creating documents throughout the year. I will be sending home an email to all Older Kids parents to explain how to access their accounts at home. I also introduced Khan Academy which they can also access from home using their Google login information. Khan Academy is a tool to help reinforce math concepts that they are learning in school.

Week of Sept. 10

Younger Kids

We reviewed our vocabulary words Cursor and Bookmarks and I introduced them to a new website pbskids.org. It is a very popular site with a lot of fun educational games. They are feeling more comfortable using the mouse and having a great time.

Middle Kids

We continued keyboard practice and then I talked about how our library is organized and how to search for books in the library.

Older Kids

The Older Kids are just cruising through their keyboarding lessons. I am very impressed with their progress. We worked on strategies to find appropriate websites. Please see last week’s tip on how to change your google settings. The kids did an online lesson on reading snippets in order to find an a website that would answer their question. http://21cif.com/rkitp/challenge/goldrush/goldrush_index.swf. We also had a little time to play around on some of the Ancient Greece websites that you will find in the menu to the left.

Week of Sept. 4

Younger Kids

We reviewed what the cursor does and I introduced a new word bookmarks. I also introduced them to a new website http://www.abcya.com/.

Older Kids

We spent most of the time talking about the Rivendell library and how to search for a book in our library. This will lead into next week’s lessons on how to find appropriate websites for research projects. A tip for you to help find age appropriate material on google. You can change the settings in options under advanced search: choose reading level basic. You can also set Safe Search settings as well. By adjusting search settings to basic your child will be less frustrated with the material he/she finds. I am guessing you will be less frustrated as well. If you need help finding this option please feel free to stop by the computer lab and I can help you out or ask your student they should be able to find it.

Great Start

Younger Kids

The kids are so excited to be in class. Last week I introduced them to the website Playground Games in order to assess how comfortable they are with the mouse. This week I introduced them to the Cursor and to the website Starfall.

Middle Kids

Moving from Younger Kids to Middle Kids can be an adjustment for the kids. I ask more of them as they are more capable. We started out talking about the different parts of the computers in the Lab and how to turn on and shutdown the computers properly. Then we started our Keyboard practice. We will be practicing Keyboarding for 10-15 minutes most days in the lab.

Older Kids

The Older Kids started the year with a review of the parts of the computers in the Lab. Then we moved on to how to properly turn on and shutdown the computer. For the first semester we will be practicing keyboarding a lot so that by second semester they will be ready to type in their assignments. In the next few weeks we will be practicing effective researching on the web.
