Dylan Hunt, Middle Kids Teacher
Middle Kids have been working hard this year to reach out and connect with our community. I checked in with some of the students to see what unique experiences they have liked the most so far.
Oliva says, “I liked when we went to the Park! It was chill, but it was fun to have everyone there. My mom got to meet all my friends and their parents, and it was awesome!”
Otis says, “Edora! I feel like field trips are more rare than playing at our own playground here. It’s fun to go out and explore a new park!”
Hawthorne liked our walking field trip to Bath Nursery, where we collaborated with our art teacher, Edd, to teach about murals and site-specific artwork. “We made murals there! We went down with Edd. He taught us about stencils. I hope our chili tree is still there!”
Max remembered the first field trip that we went on this year. Middle Kids and Older Kids got a chance to collaborate with our science teacher, Anna, and use the telescope at FRCC to look at the sun during our solar system unit. Students also got a chance to sign up for their very own library card. “I liked going to Front Range Community College because I got to see the sun through a telescope, and we got library books! We drew what we saw in the telescope, like the little lines coming out of the sun.”
Wyeth remembers when the author Todd Mitchell came in to talk about his books. “I liked his whole story about his uncle burning down his notes about his family history was crazy! My dad and I were joking around like, what did he find? It’s cool that he used that story to write a book. We also liked The Last Panther. He also talked about being dyslexic and he dedicated his book to his parents, who believed in him even though he wanted to be an author.”
Experiential and hands-on learning are an important part of Rivendell's philosophy. Field trips are just one part of that mission to help kids learn to grow!
